Executive Functioning Disorders have been around,well since humans have been around. Its not new. However EFD is not understood well and often overlooked in both adults and children. Often individuals struggling with EFD are called lazy, useless, worthless, ditzy, flakey, and so many more derogatory terms.
EFD can impact the lives of people, many people, on a small scale or on a catastrophic scale, like me. The exact population of individuals struggling with executive function disorders is not known as it is made up of various groups. Executive Function disorder is generally considered a comorbid disorder with other conditions and within the neurodiverse population. It is very well known to be attached to attention deficit disorders, less well known is autism, schizophrenia, post traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, chronic conditions like fibromyalgia and fatigue syndromes, menopause, traumatic brain injury, and many more conditions can affect your executive functioning.
Executive function is developed through the prefrontal cortex in the brain, should something affect this area or should your brain work a bit differently (ADHD or autism) then its fairly common to struggle with this aspect of life. It only adds to being made a target for ridicule and stress.
I do believe there are ways to work with it, to cope, and to build skills to manage this disability. Its certainly an aspect I’ve seen so many people hate about themselves and I struggle with this hatred of this part of me as well. I don’t want to do that anymore, I don’t want to feel this way anymore. So I’m going to talk about it. I’m going to learn about it. And whether I succeed or not each and every day doesn’t matter. I know I’m doing the best I can in managing my own struggles and disabilities and I hope that I can shed some light for those also struggling.
